WASHINGTON – The gun industry has recently experienced a surge in sales following the renewed calls for greater gun control following a string of fatal shootings throughout the U.S.
According to August records from the FBI there were nearly 1.7 million background checks alone, the highest record since background checks began in 1998. In the summer alone, records for June and July have been up at 1.5 million and 1.6 million, respectively. Paralleled to this increase are fatal shootings that took place from Charleston to Roanoke, which all generated calls for renewed gun laws.
Although the sales of guns are not tracked, the background checks are grounds for the industry to monitor the increase.
“Whenever there is a call for gun control, sales increase,” said general counsel for the firearm industry trade association National Shooting Sports Foundation, Larry Keane. “Unfortunately, this is a pattern that repeats itself.”
