New efforts are being made to eliminate illegal sex work in San Francisco. The Dear John Letters campaign is underway and urges witnesses to people trying to pick up prostitutes to take photos and send them to the police department website. Police then use the license plate of the car involved and send a Dear John letter to the owner of the vehicle as well as the picture, reminding them that solicitation is illegal. Police officials say such letters could make for some uncomfortable moments at home and they hope shaming johns works as a deterrent.
