Some San Francisco Unified and Los Angeles Unified School District students are victims in the recent surge of racist text messages being sent to African American residents across the U.S.
That’s San Francisco civil rights icon Amos Brown, who is also president of the San Francisco Chapter of the NAACP. Officials in both districts confirmed over the weekend that several students had received the texts, which have been reported in over a dozen states.
The texts in question come from unknown numbers and tell people they’ve been chosen to “pick cotton at the nearest plantation.” Officials in both San Francisco and Los Angeles say they are working with local and federal law enforcement to try and track down the culprits who have sent the texts.
