A homeless man convicted of killing a UCLA Grad student at a furniture store has been ruled sane and will face a sentencing hearing. Shawn Laval Smith stabbed 24-year-old Brianna Kupfer 46 times in a random attack inside the Hancock Park store in January of 2022.
His attorney argued that he was insane and should be placed in a treatment center. However, on Wednesday, a Superior Court Judge in Los Angeles ruled that Smith will be sentenced in an upcoming hearing. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole for his first-degree murder conviction.
