Now Here’s An Idea: Lawmakers Should Go Without Pay Until Debt Limit Resolved

By

(Washington, DC) — A Virginia Democrat is calling for members of Congress to go without pay until the debt limit crisis is resolved. Representative Abigail Spanberger requested Congress’s chief administrative officer withhold pay for lawmakers until the nation’s borrowing limit has been raised. She said if the American people and economy are suffering due to congressional inaction, members should not receive compensation. It’s not clear how the congressional administration would block pay for lawmakers. This comes as Democrats and Republicans are deadlocked over how to raise the debt limit, as Republicans are demanding steep cuts in exchange for their votes to do so. The U.S. could default on its debt by early June.
