California Bill Placing Limits On Traffic Stops Moves Forward

(Sacramento, CA) — California lawmakers are advancing a bill that would place limits on traffic stops for minor violations. , unless another reason for a stop exists. Bill author state Senator Steven Bradford, who is Black, says he was once pulled over for a broken headlight and was forced to take a field sobriety test, a stop he says would’ve been prevented under the proposal. Police could also send a citation or warning letter instead of conducting a stop. However, law enforcement groups are reluctant to give up their power to enforce traffic laws.
