The Anaheim Union High School District has been considering changes for the past few months, after some parents and students complained the name – Colonists – and logo were offensive to indigenous people. The board of trustees vote however to let the name stay, but the school logo, a pilgrim carrying muskets, will be “reimagined.” In early November, the majority of Anaheim High School students voted in favor of keeping the name, but about a third of them said the mascot should be updated. The name pays homage to German immigrants who established a wine colony in Anaheim in 1857.
Anaheim High School gets to keep its “Colonists” nickname.
