Doe This Ever End? $5 Million Real Estate Tax Ballot Measure to Fund Homeless Housing

In an all too familiar refrain, a coalition of housing advocates, labor unions and progressive groups say “millionaires and billionaires” need to pitch in more money to help solve LA’s homeless crisis. They plan to file paperwork for a ballot measure that would increase taxes on multi million dollar real estate transactions to  fund permanent housing for homeless people. Organizers hope to collect nearly 65,000 signatures by spring to place the tax proposal on the November 2022 ballot. The measure, if passed, would levy an additional 4% tax on property sales above $5 million and up  to 5.5% on transactions above $10 million. The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, the leading taxpayer advocate, is on the case to address this tax grab.
