(Portland, OR) — The Portland Association of Teachers is proposing canceling in-person instruction for high schoolers once a week after winter break. It’s called self-taught Fridays, which means students would stay home and complete school work but wouldn’t have any in-person classes. Teachers say they would spend half of the day helping students and the other half planning future lesson plans. The union is also asking Portland Public Schools for a two hour early release or late start for elementary and middle schools. The district’s Deputy Superintendent of Instruction and School Communities Dr. Shawn Bird says the proposal would reduce the number of instructional days.
