(Sacramento, CA) — Californians buy more vehicles than any other state, and they also pay the highest fuel costs in the nation. The Sacramento Bee looked into why fuel prices are so high in the state and found it’s a combination of factors. The price of crude oil has spiked. But in California, higher taxes and fees push the price per gallon to around one-dollar-thirty cents above the national average. State and federal taxes add 69 cents a gallon, plus 11 cents per gallon in sales taxes. Fees for storage tanks, greenhouse gas emissions, and reformulated fuel add 39 cents a gallon at the pump. Experts predict that prices should fall by next year.
