(Oceanside, CA) — The man credited with opening up the world of surfing to everyone with the boogie board has died. Surfing legend Tom Morey died last week at Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills. The inventor of the boogie board was born in Detroit but moved West at the age of eight and became a true Southern California kid. He mastered surfing at a young age, studied math at the University of Southern California and later worked for defense contractor Douglas Aircraft. There he encountered the space-aged materials that inspired the light, foam-based boogie board which took the beach world by storm. Morey was 86 years old.
