Biden Speaks To Disappointing Jobs Figures
(Washington, DC) — President Biden is trying to put a positive spin on the latest way-off-predictions monthly jobs report. Speaking at the White House, Biden, apparently aspirationally, said the economic recovery is durable and strong. He noted continued economic growth during his administration,–meaning over the height of the pandemic– with wages on the rise. Biden added, “We are getting results” and said there’s much more work to do. The economy added 235-thousand jobs last month, far below the 750,000 expected. The unemployment rate fell to five-point-two percent, down from five-point-four percent in July.
Meantime, Biden praised the rising numbers of COVID vaccinations, but said there are still too many Americans who are not vaccinated. He warned about the rapid spread of the Delta variant and said it’s having an impact on the economic recovery. Meantime, the President called for final congressional passage of a massive infrastructure bill. He said it will create many good new jobs.
(Sacramento, CA) — After many months, roughly two million Californians will lose their enhanced unemployment benefits. Congress enacted four programs in 2020 to cushion the loss of jobs due to the pandemic. Those programs end on September 4th. However, experts note it’s not likely there will be a surge in job seeking. Studies have shown that health, safety, and child care rank high in overall concerns about returning to work. Also, the savings rate when up in 2020, which is allowing job seekers to be pickier about employment offers.
