(Washington, DC) — President Biden says he stands by his decision to leave Afghanistan, despite the president fleeing the country and the Taliban declaring victory.. Speaking from the White House, Biden said staying in Afghanistan is not what the American people want, but he didn’t leave sooner because the Afghan government thought it would be destabilzing. He also said that the situation unfolded more quickly than he anticipated. Biden blamed the Afghan security forces for the quick collapse of the country at the hands of the Taliban. Biden said the images coming out from the Kabul airport showing people clinging to airplanes are heartbreaking. U.S. military troops have maintained control of the airport for now as thousands of Afghans try to flee the country.
