Plan to eliminate jaywalking tickets. What could possibly go wrong?

(San Francisco, CA) — Jaywalking tickets would be eliminated if a California lawmaker gets his way. San Francisco Assemblymember Phil Ting contends jaywalking laws are arbitrarily enforced in California and create opportunities for police to racially profile people. Ting cites a study showing Black Californians are four and a half times more likely to be stopped for jaywalking compared to White residents. Jaywalking fines can add up to hundreds of dollars. Ting’s Freedom to Walk Act would legalize crossings, when safe, outside of a crosswalk or against a traffic light.
