(San Diego, CA) — San Diego’s downtown convention center is going to be used as a temporary shelter for unaccompanied children seeking asylum at the border. A joint statement by Mayor Todd Gloria and County Board of Supervisors’ Chair Nathan Fletcher says the “federally funded effort will provide vital services to these vulnerable children.” The date for when the convention center will become a temporary home for unaccompanied migrant children up to age 17 is being finalized. They say the average length of stay for each child will be about 30 days and once it is operational, the site will be used for approximately three months.
