California Governor Outlines ‘Modest’ Increase In COVID Metrics
California Governor Gavin Newsom is reporting nearly five-thousand new coronavirus cases and 80 deaths since yesterday, among California’s population of about 40 million people. During a briefing, the governor highlighted the state’s continued “modest” increase in metrics like hospitalizations and ICU admissions over the last 14 days. In that period, its positivity rate is five-point-three-percent, slightly higher than the number earlier this week, and about at the national average. Newsom said yesterday 101,000 tests were done and was adamant about needing to test more residents.
As of today, California’s formal testing task force will end. The state’s testing focus will shift to under-served communities.
The governor called for Imperial County to reinstate its stay-at-home order. He added additional resources are being sent there as its positivity rate is extremely high and hospitals are overwhelmed with patients. Newsom is specifically monitoring at least 15 other counties, Los Angeles is among those on the Governor’s list.
