UTLA For Defunding The Police

(Los Angeles, CA) — Leaders for United Teachers Los Angeles are supporting the push to defund the police. UTLA says it wants to eliminate the Los Angeles School Police Department. The 400 member force serves the Los Angeles Unified School District and costs the district roughly 70-million-dollars of their eight-billion-dollar-budget. UTLA wants to spend the money on getting more counselors, nurses, psychologists and social workers on campuses. The union’s board of directors is working to get a group vote on the matter.

Boards Come Down Following Pandemic, Looting

(Los Angeles, CA) — Business owners in Los Angeles are beginning to take down the plywood that covers their store fronts. Businesses in L.A. have been closed for nearly three months due to the pandemic and just as the city was preparing to reopen, police brutality protests erupted nationwide. Activists are upset about the death of George Floyd who died while in Minneapolis police custody on Memorial Day. Peaceful protests were overran by looters in Beverly Hills, the Fairfax District and Santa Monica. With this weeks protests remaining peaceful, business are taking down the boards and preparing to reopen.

Long Beach PD Bans Use Of Chokeholds

(Los Angeles, CA) — The Long Beach Police Department is the latest law enforcement agency in Southern California to ban its officers from using chokeholds. The controversial carotid restraint was also banned by the OC, LA, Santa Ana, Corona, Pasadena, El Monte and Placentia police departments this week. The move comes following the death of an unarmed black man who was killed in Minneapolis Police custody two weeks ago when an arresting officer kneeled on George Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

Petition Circulating To Remove Santa Monica Police Chief

(Santa Monica, CA) — People want the Santa Monica police chief gone. A petition circulating online has already gathered more than 59-thousand signatures asking for the removal of Chief Cynthia Renaud. Renaud is facing criticism after hundreds of Santa Monica stores were looted on March 31st. Interim City Manager Lane Dilg said George Floyd protests were peaceful until the movement was taken over by organized crime. The council voted to have an independent investigation into Chief Renaud’s response to the looting.
