Santa Ana Police Chief David Valentin says a six-year-old girl was abducted in 2012 and assaulted in a car.

”Following the assault, the victim was returned to the 14-hundred block of South Townsend and essentially dumped out.”

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer says Francisco Lopez was caught after scientists compared the suspect’s DNA to the DNA of female defendants from other cases.

”There was a hit between the female sample – submitted from Orange County in 2014 – and mister Lopez’s sample that had been put into the system as an unknown in 2012.”

Older technology only allowed them to compare DNA to male defendants.
