Nearly 30 people are still missing after a boat burst into flames and sank off the coast of the Channel Islands. So far, four bodies have been recovered.

Just after 3 am, that 75-foot chartered boat caught fire and sank 20 yards off the coast of Santa Cruz Island. Coast Guard Captain Monica Rochester says five crew members survived..

”The crew, was actually already awake and on the bridge and they jumped off.”

She says the passengers, apparently, were not so lucky.

”My understanding – or the report I received – they below decks asleep.”

Good Samaritans in boats around Santa Cruz Island were able to rescue the crew members. The brother of a crew members says there was an apparent explosion on the vessel.
