Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the torture and murder of a 10-year-old boy. Investigators say Anthony Avalos was abused and killed by his mother and her boyfriend. Heather Barron and Kareem Leiva remain in jail without bail in connection with the June 2018 death. While California still allows death penalty prosecutions, executions are on hold for now because of a moritorium issued by Governor Gavin Newsom.
