San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors is adopting a program that expands conservatorship. That’s when a court rules a person is a danger to themselves and needs help. The pilot program uses a new legislation authored by State Senator Scott Wiener which he says could be used in LA. “There are people in Los Angeles who very much want the county to move forward, in terms of opting in to this conservatorship program, but the county has not moved forward yet.” Conservatorship only targets people with repeated psychiatric holds. But the San Francisco Democrat says even his famously liberal city needs to take action. ”So, I think among residents in San Francisco, people understand that this approach – conserving people who are in crisis – is a good thing, is a positive thing.”
