Animal rights advocates are condemning the decision to allow the hunting of a mountain lion suspected of killing a dozen livestock in the canyons of Malibu.

Lynn Cullens with the Mountain Lion Foundation says over 200 big cats are killed each year on depredation permits and each death is unnecessary.

“Deeply saddened.”

A 4-year-old cougar known as P-45 is believed to have killed 11 alpacas and one goat over the weekend.

Cullens says even though the owners took steps to protect their animals, more should have been done.

“The reason answer to to keep those animals enclosed from dusk to dawn and that means in a pen with a roof and doors.”

Hunters have less than 10 days to find and kill P-45 before the depredation permit expires.
