The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in connection with wait times and fees for gun permits. The investigation, announced Thursday, will determine whether the LASD is violating the Second Amendment by denying residents’ gun rights.

The DOJ names a federal lawsuit, in which two residents challenged the 18-month delay that the LASD imposed on them when processing their concealed handgun license applications. The DOJ says more L.A. County residents may be dealing with similar delays. The LASD blames the processing delays on a staffing crisis.
