Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency fielded questions from residents of several San Gabriel Valley foothill communities about the safety of a collection and processing site in their backyards. During a town hall meeting in Duarte Tuesday night, EPA officials said hazardous materials would be stored on an impervious surface.
There will be secondary containment and perimeter monitoring to make sure anything brought into the area does not pose a threat to the community. The fire waste assessment site is at a park in an unincorporated section of Los Angeles County next to the San Gabriel River and bordering cities represented at the meeting. Hazardous materials from the Eaton Fire burn zone, some 15 miles to the west, will be transported on city streets through Duarte, Baldwin Park, Azusa, and Irwindale.
