Plans to consolidate schools in Oakland are on hold for now. Oakland Unified School District officials this week put off a vote on school closures after getting an earful from parents and students over the possibility.
The proposal on the table would consolidate ten schools into five in part to help Oakland close a 75-million-to-95-million-dollar budget deficit next year.
It’s unclear if the proposal will come up for an actual vote in the near future. Oakland had just over 34-thousand students enrolled in 2023, which is roughly 16-thousand students less than the number enrolled in 2003.
