The state of California is taking action against the city of Norwalk, which extended its ban on homeless shelters in August.
On Thursday, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office announced Norwalk has violated the state’s housing element law, which sets certain housing building and planning standards for city and county governments. As a result, Norwalk is losing its eligibility for key housing and homelessness funds. It is also no longer allowed to deny certain affordable housing projects.
Newsom is also threatening to sue the city if it does not change its approach to homelessness. The city had been given until September 23rd to repeal the ten-month extension on its homeless shelter ban.
