The Babylon Bee is suing the state of California over new laws that it says essentially make political satire illegal in the state. The satire website says the laws clamp down on free speech. Governor Gavin Newsom signed several bills into law that focus on “deepfake” videos and stories published on social media and elsewhere.
One of the laws requires satirical content to be clearly labeled as such or removed. The Editor-in-Chief of the Babylon Bee says requiring a disclaimer to let readers know an article is a parody stifles and kills the joke.
