California is considering a new law that would require new cars to have technology that alerts drivers when they are driving more than ten miles over the speed limit. If it becomes law, California would be the first state to require the technology.

New cars sold or built in the state would need to be equipped with intelligent speed assistance, which uses GPS to notify drivers when they are speeding. The law, if passed, would mandate a one-time visual and audio alert each time a driver exceeds the speed limit. It would apply to vehicles starting with the 2030 model year, with exemptions for emergency vehicles
