Los Angeles is a small step closer to banning its police officers from making pretextual traffic stops. L.A. City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson says the traffic stops are not effective.
Pretextual traffic stops happen when officers find someone suspected of committing a crime and pull them over for violating a less serious traffic law. The practice had led to cops recovering several illegal guns in recent years. On Wednesday, the L.A. City Council voted in favor of a research project, which will look into how far the city is allowed to go in preventing police officers from enforcing state traffic laws.
