A proposed ballot measure requiring schools to notify parents if their child identifies as a different gender has failed to qualify for the November election.
The organizers of the signature gathering effort say it was difficult to get people to sign their petition because of bias by State Attorney General Rob Bonta. They sued and lost over Bonta’s version of the measure’s title, the “Restrict Rights of Transgender Youth” initiative.
Supporters wanted it to be known as the “Protect Kids of California Act.” In the end, petition workers fell about 150-thousand signatures short of the required number.
