The closure of Macy’s Union Square location in San Francisco marks a significant shift in the city’s retail landscape. Supervisor Aaron Peskin confirmed the closure amidst Macy’s announcement of shuttering over 150 stores nationwide. While the flagship store will remain open until the property is sold, the Union Square Alliance suggests it could operate for years to come, potentially including the 2024 Holiday shopping season.

Approximately 400 employees at the Union Square location are affected, as stated by UFCW Local 5, the union representing the workers. Mayor Breed emphasized that the closure isn’t related to a decline in crime but rather reflects Macy’s broader strategic decisions due to sluggish sales and efforts to resist a takeover bid.

Mayor London Breed said in a statement:

The City will continue to work closely with Macy’s and any potential new owner to ensure this iconic location continues to serve San Francisco for decades to come. I’m also continuing to talk to leaders in retail, business, and real estate about how we can continue to focus on the long-term success of this site and others. There is tremendous opportunity at this site, and I know this City will continue to draw new investments and ideas. I appreciate Macy’s partnership and their commitment to working with us.

That being said, as someone who grew up in San Francisco, Macy’s has always meant a lot to the people of this city. It’s where families came to shop for the holidays. It’s where many people from my community got their first jobs, or even held jobs for decades. It’s hard to think of Macy’s not being part of our city anymore.

In response to the closures, Macy’s plans to focus on opening smaller versions of Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores, both owned by Macy’s. While the fate of other Bay Area Macy’s locations remains unclear, the closure adds to a list of iconic retail stores shutting down in Union Square and downtown San Francisco, including Nordstrom and the Westfield Mall.

The closure underscores the challenges faced by traditional brick-and-mortar retailers amidst changing consumer behaviors and the rise of online shopping.
