New data shows nearly half of people cited in San Francisco for drug use don’t live in the city. In an effort to shut down open air drug markets, the city looked at data from March of 2023 through the beginning of this month.

Of the 718 people cited for substance use, only 53-percent stated they lived in San Francisco.

The numbers also found dozens of those cited were getting county assistance and didn’t live in the county, so are committing welfare fraud. Supervisor Matt Dorsey says the numbers “confirm that San Francisco is too often a destination for drug tourism.”

Mayor London Breed says the city must “continue doubling down” on shutting down the markets that are attracting people for the wrong reasons.
