The city of Escondido is taking steps to address the homeless crisis. Escondido is adopting a strategy that prioritizes public safety first over the state and county initiatives focused on housing first. Wednesday’s board meeting adopted the policy.
Escondido Mayor Dane White tells NBC 7, at the age of 17, he was homeless on the same streets he now governs. He says the first of its kind, three-page policy statement doesn’t include shelter locations or funding details but stipulates that people staying there will need to remain sober. It would also crack down on specific crimes often associated with homelessness.
The plan is getting pushback from homeless advocates and Interfaith Community Services, saying the restrictions will prevent many homeless people from using the shelter.
