Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat will now be filled by someone appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Feinstein died Friday at the age of 90. Earlier this month, Newsom told NBC’s “Meet the Press” he would select an interim replacement should Feinstein choose to step down before the next election.
California law doesn’t require a vote to fill a vacant seat until the next general election. Newsom said he would not choose any of the California Democrats currently running for Feinstein’s seat in the 2024 election.
