California Governor Gavin Newsom signed three gun bills into law Tuesday morning in Sacramento. During the signing ceremony, Newsom said there is a real need for action, not only in California but nationally.
The three bills place an 11-percent excise tax on gun manufacturers, microstamp automatic weapons, and restrict violent offenders from owning guns.
Newsom said the effort is facing opposition in the courts. He was recently dealt legal losses when judges ruled two of the state’s gun laws unconstitutional. Newsom characterized those rulings and others that apply to abortion, and LGBTQ issues, as an organized movement to roll back rights to the 1960s.
