Preparations are underway for what could be the first tropical storm to make landfall in Southern California since 1939. Hurricane Hilary intensified to a category four storm on Thursday night, but is expected to weaken to a tropical storm by the time it reaches Southern California this weekend. On Thursday, crews were busy clearing storm drains at several beaches. Some of that work was done by the pier in Hermosa Beach, which is expecting about three inches of rain. The storm could make landfall anywhere from the Baja California Peninsula to as far north as Santa Barbara. But, some forecasting models show Palm Springs getting the heaviest rain.
