Hollywood Sign Celebrates Centennial
(Los Angeles, CA) — The world-famous Hollywood Sign is celebrating 100 years. The sign debuted in 1923 on Mount Lee and orginally read “Hollywoodland.” It was meant to promote the name of a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. After falling into disrepair in the 1940s, the California landmark was restored and the “land” portion was removed. 1923 was known as the Big Bang in L-A when other iconic landmarks debuted like the L-A Coliseum and the Biltmore Hotel. It also coincided with a sea change in L-A when its population surpassed San Francisco for the first time.
