(Sacramento, CA) – It’s fentanyl and as Sacramento Supervising DA Rochelle Beardsley recently said, one pill can kill. Four-thousand deaths in California in 2020 were caused by fentanyl. That’s up by more than double the previous year as the drug is moving more readily into the state. Among young people, the rise in deaths is significantly alarming, especially since the overall drug use rate among teens has mostly remained unchanged. According to the California Department of Public Health, in 2021 there were nearly seven-thousand opioid-related overdose deaths in California with nearly six-thousand related to fentanyl. There were over 200 fentanyl-related overdose deaths among teens, ages 15 to 19 years old in the state. Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.
