The Los Angeles City Council is revamping the way the city repairs its sidewalks. The Council approved a motion aimed at improving the city’s system of repairs, given that in last five years, it has received more than 1,700 claims and 1,020 lawsuits for sidewalk injuries. The city has paid out over $35 million in settlements, including $12 million in the 2020-21 fiscal year alone. The City Council voted to adopt recommendations from Controller Ron Galperin, including focusing on specific areas in need of repair instead of assessing entire parcels, changing priorities to include sidewalks other than those near city facilities and streamlining the pre-construction process. They also plan to secure more funding. The motion had previously passed the Public Works and Personnel, Audits, and Animal Welfare committees.
