(Sacramento, CA) — California health officials are reporting a post-Christmas surge of COVID-19 in the state. With vaccination numbers soaring, new cases and hospitalizations are also on the rise, largely among the un-vaccinated. Tuesday’s update shows 79 percent of people five years old and up have gotten at least one shot. Those who have not received a vaccine are seven-point-six percent more likely to catch COVID, 12 percent more likely to be hospitalized and 15 percent more likely to die from COVID. The testing positivity rate is now nine-point-seven percent over the past seven days, up from two-point-four percent two weeks ago. COVID-19 claimed the lives of 46 Californians each day on average over the past week.
