(Los Angeles, CA) — Speed limits could be dropping on streets across Los Angeles once the calendar turns to 2022. The method for setting speed limits is getting an adjustment. Right now, the city sets speed limits based on the so-called “85-percent” rule. Every few years, surveyors set up at a street, monitor how fast drivers are going, and set a new speed limit at the 85th percentile of the data. But, starting on January 1st, the city will be able to lower speed limits in areas where there are safety concerns, without needing a survey first. That includes business areas with heavy foot traffic, and areas with a history of pedestrian collisions. Six-hundred-forty pedestrians were killed on L.A.’s streets between 2016 and 2020.
