Oil Spill Might Be Much Smaller Than Feared

(Huntington Beach, CA) — The size of the Southern California oil leak may be much smaller than first feared. Coast Guard officials say it might be less than 30-thousand gallons. That’s still a big spill, but much smaller than a recent estimate of 144-thousand gallons. On Thursday afternoon, Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett said that lower figure seems like a better reflection of what they’re seeing. While some wildlife has been killed, the numbers aren’t as large as first feared.

(Orange County, CA) — A Southern California DJ is suing the company responsible for the pipeline that caused an oil spill. Peter Moses Gutierrez Jr. filed the lawsuit against Amplify Energy after more than 100-thousand gallons of oil were spilled off the coast of Orange County, shutting down miles of beaches. Gutierrez says he often uses Huntington Beach to host events for his DJ business, but has been unable to do so because of the oil spill. The lawsuit claims Gutierrez will lose a great deal of business due to Amplify Energy’s negligence. He also says his health has been damaged due to exposure to toxins.

Ship At Center of Oil Spill Probe No Longer Under Investigation

(Huntington Beach, CA) — The ship investigated in connection with the massive oil spill off the coast of Orange County has been cleared of wrongdoing. Earlier this week, the Coast Guard investigated the cargo ship Rotterdam Express. It’s believed an offshore oil pipeline suffered damage after it was hooked and dragged by a ship’s anchor either late last Friday night or early Saturday morning. Yesterday, the ship’s owner said the Coast Guard is no longer investigating it for possible involvement. Meanwhile, the oil slick is starting to move further south, toward San Diego County.
