(Los Angeles, CA) — Congresswoman Karen Bass is running for mayor of Los Angeles. The California Democrat made the announcement on her Twitter page. She has represented parts of L.A. in Congress for a decade. If elected, Bass would become the first Black, female mayor in Los Angeles history. Recent polls show she’s likely to be a strong contender in an already crowded field. Current Mayor Eric Garcetti faces term limits and can’t run next year. He’s awaiting U.S. Senate confirmation to be the next U.S. Ambassador to India, while presiding over a city that has seen a crime and homelessness explosion under his stewardship. Bass may have baggage to overcome as she has been a supporter of Fidel Castro- calling his death “a great loss”.
