(Los Angeles, CA) — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is voting to ban the construction of new oil and gas wells in unincorporated areas. The plan, approved Wednesday also calls for the phasing out of existing wells in unincorporated areas of L.A. County. Supervisor Holly Mitchell, who introduced the ban, says scientific findings prove living near active oil wells leads to short and long-term health issues, like decreased lung function, cardiovascular disease, and asthma. There are currently more than one-thousand active oil and gas wells in L.A. County’s unincorporated areas.
