(Arlington, VA) — U.S. defense leaders say they’re doing what they can to get Americans and Afghans evacuated. In a briefing, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said they do not have the capability to expand the perimeter around the Kabul Airport to help get Americans in the field safely onboard U.S. flights. He added American forces don’t have the ability to go out and get large numbers of Americans if the Taliban don’t let them get to the airport. Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley argued no U.S. intelligence assessments imagined such a scenario over only eleven days. General Milley called the ongoing situation volatile, dangerous and fluid.
