Kentucky Derby Winner Medina Spirit Tests Positive For Drugs
(Louisville, KY) — Churchill Downs is suspending trainer Bob Baffert and Medina Spirit could be disqualified from this year’s Kentucky Derby win. Baffert made it clear that he disputes the positive drug test on the derby winner. Baffert says he questions the results and notes the results of the race aren’t being overturned just yet.The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission notified Baffert on Saturday that Medina Spirit returned a positive drug test after the race. Baffert says he was told the horse tested positive for betamethasone. He denies the claim and vows to fight what he calls “an injustice.” In a statement, Churchill Downs said, if the findings are upheld, Medina Spirit’s win will be invalidated and Mandaloun will be declared the winner. Baffert vows to appeal the ruling.
