To Fight Recall Newsom Can Legally Raise As Much Cash As He Wants
(Sacramento, CA) — California Governor Gavin Newsom can raise an unlimited amount of money to fight his recall. State campaign laws allow donors to contribute to a bottomless bucket of cash to help Newsom. However, candidates like San Diego Republican Kevin Faulconer will be limited in campaign donations. The reason is because the recall treats the two-part ballot differently. The first question, “Do you want to recall Governor Newsom” is viewed as a ballot measure, which places zero limits on donations. The second question asks voters to choose a replacement for governor. That is seen as a political campaign, where individual cash contributions are limited by law.
