The state of California is about to get a gubernatorial recall election for the first time since Gray Davis was removed from office in 2003. A report released by the California Secretary of State on Friday showed that the Recall Campaign against Governor Gavin Newsom has nearly 1.2 million confirmed signatures counted so far out of a total of roughly 1.45 million reviewed so far. Those are strong numbers given that the signature validity rate is over 80% and over 2.1 million total signatures have been collected by the March 17 deadline. That’s according to RecallGavin2020 organizers Mike Netter, along with Orrin Heatlie and Randy Economy and thousands of volunteers. The recall effort has apparently done what many in the political establishment said was nearly impossible, and during a pandemic to boot. Should the current valid signature rate hold, the campaign should have nearly 1.7 million signatures validated which is provides the comfortable padding for the 1.495 million needed for the recall to go on the ballot later this year. The Secretary of State’s report also confirmed that Los Angeles County gathered the most signatures of any county, with nearly half of those claiming to be registered Democrats, followed by signatures from voters in Orange County.

A tweet from Rob Pyars @rpyars shows some interesting and positive stats:
A site update today from proponents of the Gavin Newsom recall indicates that 2,116,853 signatures have been submitted. Of the 662,143 submitted but not yet processed, proponents need just 307,636 to be valid to hit the 1,495,709 threshold that triggers the recall election.
