San Francisco School News: Full, In-person Reopening? Nah. Renaming 44 Schools

(San Francisco, (CA) — San Francisco is renaming 44 schools. The school board voted on the motion yesterday, rebranding schools whose namesakes are now considered to have dishonorable legacies. The names of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson will be replaced because of their ties to slavery and oppression of indigenous people. However, it comes with the hefty price tag in a district already facing budget issues. Schools may pay from 400-thousand to one-million-dollars to replace the school sign, buy new uniforms and repaint gym floors. Mayor London Breed has criticized the plan, saying schools should be focused on reopening, not renaming. The schools have until April to come up with a new name. The reading proficiency rate for San Francisco public schools is 55%
