(Washington, DC) — Senate Democrats are making a push once again to give Washington, D.C., statehood. While introducing the bill, Democratic Senator Tom Carper of Delaware said it’s long overdue for the more than 700-thousand residents of the District of Columbia. Democrats would need the support of at least ten Republicans for DC to become a state unless the Senate ends the filibuster. With no filibuster, statehood could be accomplished with 50 votes plus a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Harris. President Biden has already indicated that he would sign a D.C. statehood bill. Republicans have long opposed DC statehood because it would likely expand the power of Democrats. The Heritage Foundation makes the cast that a constitutional amendment would be required.
